Description
The Texas General Land Office primarily serves the schoolchildren, veterans, and the environment of Texas. The agency does so by preserving our history, maximizing state revenue through innovative administration, and through the prudent stewardship of state lands and natural resources. This position is with our Enterprise Technology Systems (ETS) area of the agency.
The Senior Systems Administrator performs advanced (senior-level) systems administration work. Work involves coordinating the upkeep, configuration, and reliable operation of systems. Installs and upgrades computer components and system software. May supervise the work of others. Works under minimal supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment
Veterans, Reservist or Guardsman with an MOS or additional duties that fall in the fields of Army – 255Z – Senior Network Operations Technician; Navy – IT – Information Systems Technician; Coast Guard – ISM – Information Systems Management; Marine – 0639 – Network Chief; Air Force – 3D0X2 – Cyber Systems Operations, or other related fields pertaining to the minimum experience requirement may meet the minimum qualifications for this position.

Essential Job Duties
- Performs systems administration and provides support for servers, systems, and services as part of an enterprise IT operations team; coordinates and maintains the functionality of the systems environment, the implementation of technology solutions, the development of server upgrade plans and procedures, and the installation of operating systems and other software.
- Oversees, performs, and provides guidance in troubleshooting and solving complex problems related to system software and hardware incident and problem calls, and in the processing of service requests and tasks.
- Independently initiate, develop, and lead the implementation of best practices, standard operating procedures, and processes for IT service management. Define, implement, measure, and review metrics for IT services that result in continuous efficiency, quality, and systems management improvements.
- Coordinates projects that cross functional agency systems, business units and other state entities. Handle numerous projects/priorities using proven project management methodologies and sound operations practices to ensure quality delivery of solutions.
- Enter, manage, and provide oversight on IT support tickets within the IT service management system. Record problem symptoms, provide and document updates and resolution for incidents, service requests and support root cause analysis.
- Coordinates and/or develops operating procedures for technical support, troubleshooting, maintenance, and innovative systems administration techniques.
- Defines and manages the roles and access privileges of individual users and devices to a variety of applications to prevent unauthorized access.
- Oversees and/or evaluates proposals and work products of third-party vendors to determine the quality, accuracy, and completeness.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in computer science, information systems, computer engineering or a related field. Equivalent system administration experience may be substituted for a bachelor’s degree based on 1 year of work experience for every 1 year of education.
- 8 years of professional experience working in information technology operations, support, or a related field.
- Experience working within or leading an operations team supporting an enterprise environment spanning multiple sites.
- Experience in the administration of enterprise applications, services, networks, and operating systems; enterprise backup and recovery procedures, system configuration management tools, operations management and system performance-monitoring tools, directories, virtualization, application delivery, and endpoint management.
- Experience with commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures used in maintaining a Windows infrastructure including Windows Server and Windows Workstation operating systems, Microsoft Active Directory, and Windows group policy management.
- Experience with enterprise network administration, wireless services and core network services (DHCP, DNS)
- Experience managing Microsoft O365 services including Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint Online, and Power Platform.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in computer science, information systems, computer engineering or a related field.
- Experience managing WSUS, MDT, IIS, and Microsoft SQL Administration
- Experience designing, implementing, and managing a virtual machine infrastructure environment.
- Experience designing, implementing, and managing performance monitoring platforms.
- Experience with identity management, managing identity providers, and enabling SSO and provisioning of accounts.
- Advanced experience designing, implementing and managing VMware technologies, including vSphere/ESX, VMware View, vCenter, and Site Recovery Manager
- Advanced experience troubleshooting ESX issues related to storage, network, and performance issues
- Advanced experience designing, implementing, and managing an Exchange Online email system and mail flow integrating with third-party service providers.
- Advanced experience designing, implementing, and managing Microsoft O365 services including Teams, SharePoint Online, and Power Platform.
- Advanced experience with shell scripting: Windows PowerShell integrated scripting environment or similar.
- Advanced experience with enterprise network administration, wireless, and core network services including DHCP, DNS, SMTP, TCP/IP.
Experience with the following technologies, tools, and platforms:

Physical Requirements
