Description
The Texas General Land Office primarily serves the schoolchildren, veterans, and the environment of Texas. The agency does so by preserving our history, maximizing state revenue through innovative administration, and through the prudent stewardship of state lands and natural resources. This position is with our Financial Management Department.
The Travel Coordinator performs complex (journey-level) accounting work. Work involves preparing financial statements, records, documents, and reports. May specialize in some phase of accounting work such as federal funds accounting, property and equipment control, cost, budgeting, or bond servicing. May provide guidance to others. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Job Elements
- Performs administrative activities related to agency business travel including researching travel options, making airline and rental car reservations, and consulting with staff to ensure compliance with agency travel policies and procedures, statutes, and state laws. Analyzes and recommends improvements to travel and accounting procedures.
- Audits, classifies, and codes financial documents and enters financial transactions accordingly to ensure compliance with policies and procedures and with state and federal statutes.
- Reconciles assigned accounts, statements, and/or appropriation balances, researches discrepancies and reports findings.
Qualifications
Qualifications
Graduation from a four-year college/university with major course work in accounting, business, finance, or a related field, plus three (3) years full-time experience in accounting and financial operations.
Full-time Accounting or closely related experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
- Two (2) or more years with a State of Texas or higher education agency;
- Two (2) or more years coordinating travel;
- Two (2) or more years of Microsoft Excel experience; and
- Two (2) or more years of Cash Receipts experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures affecting the maintenance of accounting records and automated accounting systems.
- Skill in the use of office equipment and personal computers; proficient with MS Office and acceptable accounting systems like MIP Fund Accounting.
- Ability to interpret and apply accounting theory; to plan and coordinate financial programs; to plan procedures and coordinate accounting operations; to interpret laws and regulations; to perform complex accounting transactions; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Physical Requirements
This position requires the employee to primarily perform non-sedentary work; mobility (moving around the work-site) is routinely required to carry out some duties including extensive moving upon and traveling across uneven surfaces, rough terrain and/or desolate areas; normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall, and apply certain practices and policies; marginal or corrected visual and auditory requirements; constant use of personal computers, copiers, printers, and telephones; the ability to move about the office to access file cabinets and office machinery; requires the stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; ability to move and transport records, documents, boxes and all related information, materials and tools, weighing up to 50 pounds; frequent sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position; ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach and/or steer a boat as needed; the ability to work outside and adapt to adverse weather conditions to include sea, sky and land environments; the ability to work under deadlines, as a team member, and in direct contact with others; and the ability to remain stationary for long periods of time when commuting to and from assigned destination and when traveling on state business including field work and training assignments.
