Job Description
The Communications Specialist is selected by and responsible to the Communications Manager as part of the Office of Strategic Communications and Process Improvement and performs highly complex informational work for the Agency. Work involves the preparation, coordination and dissemination of information concerning agency functions for multiple internal and external audiences. Works alongside senior communications staff, under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.
Essential Duties
- Analyzes, coordinates, writes and edits agency documents, publications and news for multiple types of media, to a diverse audience.
- Assists with producing talking points, statements, FAQs, FGAs, press releases, public speeches, scripts and PowerPoint presentations.
- Assists with content and layout of agency communications, including newsletters and publications.
- Copy edits, proofreads and distributes announcements to specific agency divisions/sections and the general public.
- Researches and gathers information for media responses and interviews.
- Responds to general information requests about agency activity and news.
- Monitors daily news media coverage, for agency and related issues.
- Monitors legislative and state government activities affecting the agency and shares relevant information with agency personnel and the public.
- Assists with strategic communication plans related to the goals and priorities of the agency.
- Assists with social media writing, posting, monitoring and overall strategy.
- Assists with producing and editing content and with graphic design for web, print, electronic and social media.
- Assists with crisis communications planning and response, including the handling of sensitive information.
- May serve as an agency liaison with media representatives at the national, regional and local levels, fielding inquiries in a timely and courteous manner.
- May assist with the production of photographic, audio and video products, including public service announcements.
- May assist with legislative and constituent inquiries.
- Attends and may provide support for agency commission and advisory board meetings.
- Plans, prepares and completes special projects with wide latitude for independent work.
- Complies with division and/or agency training requirements.
- Keeps management appropriately informed of ongoing activity and critical matters affecting the operation and well-being of the agency.

- Adheres to all department procedures and personnel policies and performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Four years’ experience in journalism, communications, public relations, or media in a professional setting/position. Experience in the planning, development, preparation and dissemination of time-sensitive information within a professional organization, using a variety of communication methods preferred. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in journalism, public relations, communications or a related field preferred, and may substitute for one year of the experience requirement.
