Data Scientist– Austin, Texas

The Office of the Governor is looking for a Data Scientist (Data Scientist II) to work in the newly established Texas Regulatory Efficiency Office.

What You’ll Earn

The salary is $9,500.00 – $10,416.67 a month ($114,000.00 – $125,000.04 a year).

What You’ll Do

This position performs advanced (senior-level) data science work. Work involves gathering, analyzing, and managing large data sets to guide key business decisions and model various market conditions to provide information for special projects and reports for the Texas Regulatory Efficiency Office (the Office). Work also involves designing and constructing new processes for data modeling and production using prototypes, algorithms, predictive models, and custom analysis in support of the Office.

  • Develops and manages predictive modeling algorithms to mine large data sets to make strategic decisions and discover solutions to advance program initiatives.
  • Develops and implements databases, data collection systems, data analytics, and other strategies for the Office that optimizes statistical efficiency, accuracy, and quality.
  • Develops data quality measures, analyzes data quality results, and implements necessary changes to ensure data quality improvement.
  • Gathers, cleans, processes, compiles, and queries raw data.
  • Codes programs to automate data collection and processing and to use for statistical modeling and graphic analysis; builds data visualization tools, dashboards, and reports.
  • Researches and applies knowledge of existing and emerging data science principles, theories, and techniques to inform business decisions; and researches analytic products to develop new or improved predictive modeling products.
  • Identifies and adopts best practices for the Office in data reporting and analysis: data integrity, design, analysis, validation, and documentation.
  • Prepares concise, comprehensive technical reports to present and interpret data, identify viable alternatives, and make and justify recommendations on data revisions.
  • Administers project planning techniques to divide projects into tasks and ensure that deadlines are met.
  • Quantifies the potential value of a new data set for future models and models accuracy over baselines for data sets.
  • May serve as a subject matter expert for the Office on data integrity, extraction, and compilation.

How You’ll Qualify

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in data science, business analytics, computer science, computer information systems, management information systems, accounting, finance, mathematics, statistics, economics, or a related field; and
  • Five (5) years of experience in data science, predictive modeling, and algorithm work.

Note: Experience and education may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.

You’re a Great Fit with

  • MS or PhD in computer science, data science, statistics, business analytics, management information systems, or equivalent fields;
  • Applied Machine Learning experience (regression and classification);
  • Strong mathematical background (linear algebra, calculus, probability, and statistics);
  • Experience with scalable ML (MapReduce, Spark); and
  • Previous experience working at a government agency (local/state/federal).
